Understanding Rosacea: Symptoms, Triggers and Management

Updated: Apr 11, 2024

Rosacea is a common skin disorder that affects many individuals causing redness on the face, visible blood vessels, and at times small red pimples filled with pus. It typically occurs most commonly in the central part of the face where it involves the forehead, cheeks, nose and chin. While rosacea can affect anyone, women are diagnosed more frequently as well as people with lighter skin tones. This condition usually starts after 30 years old and may be characterized by periods of improvement followed by flare-ups. If left untreated rosacea tends to get worse over time but its signs can be controlled and reduced through effective management including some medical treatments.

Symptoms and Types of Rosacea

Rosacea has four main subtypes whereby an individual may exhibit features of more than one subtype:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea (ETR): This type is characterized by permanent redness (erythema) localized to the middle part of the face along with apparent blood vessels (telangiectasias). People suffering from ETR feel their faces become hot or stinging occasionally when they flush.

  2. Papulopustular Rosacea: It is distinguished by persistent redness with papules (small, solid bumps) and pustules (bumps containing pus). This subtype resembles acne; nonetheless it lacks blackheads unlike ordinary acne vulgaris lesions; thus affecting parts other than those normally affected by acne.

  3. Phymatous Rosacea: Pymatous rosacea results in thickening of the skin particularly on the nose hence rhinophyma is formed. The subtype also causes roughness on the skin’s surface that looks like lots of tiny bumps were there in spots on your skin texture irregularities while this type could appear less often among males than others.

  4. Ocular Rosacea: This kind is characterized by a watery or bloodshot look in the eyes, burning or gritty sensation, sensitivity to light, and blurred vision also feeling like something has entered into the eye. Untreated ocular rosacea may lead to severe damage to and loss of sight from our eye.

Triggers and Factors that Aggravate Rosacea

Although the exact cause of rosacea is unknown; it is thought to be due to a combination of genetic, environmental and immune factors. Some triggers can bring about flare-ups by increasing the flow of blood on the skin surface thus making them more visible. Common triggers are:

- Sunburns

- Emotional stress

- Hotness or coldness

- Physical exertions

- Pungent diets

- Taking alcohol

- Drinking hot liquids frequently.

- Winds or cold weather conditions

- Cosmetics that irritate the skin; synthetic chemicals, perfumes.

- Certain drugs such as vasodilators.

It should be noted that these triggers differ from one individual to another making it possible for an individual with rosacea to keep their condition under good control if they know what exactly brings forth redness or swelling on their face at particular times during a day.

Managing Rosacea: Treatment Options

Rosacea cannot be cured presently but its signs can be controlled and reduced through effective management including some medical treatments. The treatment options are usually based on subtype and severity. Some common methods include:

Lifestyle Changes:

In managing rosacea it is important for sufferers to avoid known triggers which may involve covering up fully while out in the sun using sunscreen lotions having high sun protection factor outside doing away with all powerful skincare products containing chemical preservatives as well as any abrasive materials capable of irritating delicate facial tissues.

Topical Treatments:

Brimonidine (a selective alpha-adrenergic agonist) is one of several topical agents that can be prescribed by physicians to alleviate redness. Once skin inflammation subsides, antibiotics such as metronidazole and azelaic acid can also be applied topically on the skin to reduce the number of papules and pustules.

Orally Administered Antibiotics:

Moderately to severely rosacea sufferers may be prescribed oral antibiotics to minimize inflammation and kill bacteria. Some common ones include tetracycline, doxycycline, and minocycline. These are usually used for a short period of time as a measure to avoid antibiotic resistance.

Isotretinoin:

Isotretinoin can be prescribed for severe cases of inflammatory rosacea that have not responded to other treatments. Because it has serious side effects, this potent oral medication is reserved for refractory cases.

Laser and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Therapy:

These treatments help reduce visible broken blood vessels and redness. By using specific light wavelengths that target the blood vessels under your skin, they cause them to shrink or disappear completely. Usually you will need several sessions for maximal effect.

Microneedling:

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that involves creating tiny punctures in the skin using small needles. This controlled damage activates the body’s own healing response inducing collagen and elastin synthesis. Microneedling on its part can strengthen the skin, minimize redness as well as enhance overall texture so as to improve the look of rosacea. Often it is combined with topical therapies so that their absorption by epidermis can be facilitated hence making them more effective.

Microneedling has emerged as an attractive option towards managing rosacea in patients who prefer minimally invasive procedures. This process makes use of inherent bodily curative powers to uplift appearance of dermal surfaces affected by rosacea condition. Here’s how microneedling treats various concerns linked with this condition.

  1. Reducing Redness and Inflammation: The most conspicuous sign of rosacea is constant reddening on one’s face particularly cheeks either accompanied by erythematotelangiectatic or papulopustular symptoms. Microneedling on the other hand creates micro-injuries in the skin thus activating an individual’s self-repairing defense mechanism against wounds. This response includes the release of growth factors and the stimulation of collagen and elastin synthesis. Consequently, new collagen fibers act as support to blood vessels, reducing their visibility and improving overall skin tone. Furthermore, this injury also initiates a process called neovascularization whereby it leads to formation of newer healthier capillaries which may account for lesser redness.

  2. Improving Skin Texture and Thickening: In some cases, rosacea can appear as phymatous subtype where one experiences thickened skin with rough texture. Microneedling helps break down excess collagen leading to formation of more organized collagen fibers thereby improving skin texture. Collagen remodeling is another name for this activity that results in a smoother skin surface which is also more even. Moreover, topical treatments like retinoids are also used together with microneedling so that they help reduce thickening of the skin.

  3. Minimizing the Appearance of Pustules and Papules: The inflammatory lesions including pustules and papules associated with rosacea can be effectively controlled through microneedling. So by creating those tiny injuries on your epidermis it stimulates growth factor releasing that brings antimicrobial agents into play such cytokines among others which are found at the site where medicine has been applied onto your epidermis or acne bumps themselves, have been damaged by means of neoadjunctive therapy; otherwise such secondary infections would add up to already damaged dermal surface thereby making things even worse for you. Apart from that, topical drugs utilized in treating these spots get absorbed better because of micro-needling therapy hence increasing effectiveness.

  4. Enhancing Skincare Product Absorption: One main advantage that comes with microneedling lies within its ability to create minute pores on your skin thereby improving the penetration and efficiency of any topically applied products. For instance, those with rosacea will have access to deep soothing and calming formulas that can reach further into their subcutaneous layers for better relief from manifestations. This should address skin redness, inflammation, and breakouts related to this condition; examples are azelaic acid, niacinamide or anti-inflammatory plant extracts.

  5. Results that Last: Microneedling delivers lasting results, and the improvements in skin texture, tone, and redness reduction can be maintained with intermittent maintenance treatments. This procedure also activates the natural regenerative processes of the skin which lead to a steady production of collagen as well as general rejuvenation of the skin. Quite a number notice their rosacea symptoms improve drastically leading to clearer, tranquil and more uniform complexion.
